The residents of Teachers Colony have decided to impart conversational Kannada classes for non-Kannadigas at a nominal rate of Rs 100 while senior citizens don’t have to pay anything.

Though this is meant for residents staying in and around Teacher’s Colony, they have been kind enough to extend this facility to all the residents of HSR Layout and HSR Layout extension.

Residents start conversational Kannada classes for non-Kannadigas! 1

The classes will be conducted every Sunday, beginning October 14, 2018. They will be held over two months. The Kannada sessions will be held at Carmel Garden Public School from 11am to 1230pm. “The necessary books will be provided by us,” says Divya Yogeesh. “A teacher from BTM Layout will be the regular faculty in addition to the Kannada-speaking residents who volunteer from time to time.”

In addition to weekly contact classes, the education will happen through a WhatsApp group specifically set up only for students. “Every day, we will teach them how to draft one sentence,” says Divya. “In addition, all the doubts will be clarified by the tutors in the WhatsApp group.”

The interested candidates can register their names by paying Rs 100 as the registration fee with either Geetha (90087-97000) or Divya (94803-50295). And those who want to volunteer as a Kannada teacher are also welcome to be part of this noble initiative.

Residents collect 70kg garbage while ‘plogging’ in Agara Lake this morning!

Residents collect 70kg garbage while 'plogging' in Agara Lake this morning! 3

Every Monday, since June 2018, a group of residents accompanied by the staff of Agara Lake and morning walkers/joggers, pick up trash at the premises of the water body.

Call it ‘plogging’ or a cleanliness drive, but this is something they began three months ago and doing it continuously and with a fervour seen only among civic activists. Plogging is a fitness trend that is all about people walking and running even while picking up plastic strewn along the roads, footpaths and park/lake premises.

Why Monday? Because the trash is maximum after the 12000-14000 people that visit the lake on weekends (6-8000/day). This morning, the amount of garbage collected by five residents, three staff workers and two citizens filled up four large bags weighing about 60-70 kilos.

“Even after the bins are made available, people still litter all over the place,” says resident Kavitha Reddy of the Agara Lake Protection & Management Society. “Plastic bottles, ice-cream cups, plastic spoons, cone Ice-cream papers, paper cups from corn, chocolate, toffees, guthka wrappers, bhel puri paper, plastic covers…”

HSR resident gets cheated of Rs 27,738 when he revealed his OTP

HSR resident gets cheated of Rs 27,738 when he revealed his OTP 4

Just yesterday, we wrote about how one resident of Lingarajpuram shared his bank’s OTP on phone to strangers and lost Rs 41884. And now, an HSR resident has suffered the same fate.

HSR resident gets cheated of Rs 27,738 when he revealed his OTP 5

On September 28, 55-year-old Krishna Rama Bhakare, a resident of Sector 2, Somasundrapalya, got a call at midnight from someone masquerading himself as a banker.

Sending him into a panic mode that his card was locked out, and they need to ascertain if he is the genuine card holder, the cheat gets him to reveal his debit card number and the OTP. By this, he was able to easily swap his SIM (a genuine procedure when you lose your SIM) and take hold of his bank account. The result is that Krishna lost Rs 27,738, and filed a complaint with the Cybercrime police station yesterday (October 4).

When anyone claiming to be from your bank calls you at unearthly hours when you have made no banking transaction, don’t trust them so easily. And never, ever share your OTP, bank account number or PIN. The banks are never supposed to ask you that.

If your card is stolen, lost or locked out, it’s best to go to the nearest bank branch and get it resolved. Many websites have been set up that give the wrong service numbers of banks. So it’s important that you have the emergency phone numbers now to deal with a future eventuality.

In another incident that was revealed by a complaint yesterday, Rajesh D, a resident of RR Layout, was cheated of Rs 60,000. On October 2, 2018, someone had taken away a whopping sum from his ICICI bank credit card.

One way to guard yourself against this is to try and use a mobile wallet like Paytm or Google Tez. Another safeguard is to limit your credit card spending to just Rs 1000 a day. That way, even if you are defrauded, the amount would not be so high. Since there have been cases of bank officials colluding with fraudsters in carrying out these scams, you can never trust anybody. Taking these precautionary measures is a surefire way of staying safe and secure.

‘Underground wells’ to recharge groundwater in parts of Sector 5 & 6

Ward 173 that includes a part of HSR Layout Sector 5 and Sector 6 residents, is off to a great start. Two percolation/recovery pits have been dug today in Teacher’s Colony that will not only prevent flooding of roads but also recharge the groundwater. By the end of the month, the entire ward will get about 68 such pits.

The recovery pits can also be called ‘underground wells’ and this work began in Ward 173 last week with Venkatapura. However, some residents objected to it fearing that their building will collapse if the pits come up close to their houses. The work was stopped but has resumed now with pits being dug in parks and stormwater drains, an idea that is inspired from resident Ashwini who has made stormwater drain wells, a successful way to recharge groundwater in Sahakar Nagar about six months ago.
The brainchild of Sudhakar Reddy, Ward 173 corporator Saraswathamma’s son, this is an idea worth emulating in Ward 174 that includes six sectors of HSR Layout.

Says Mohan Govindiah, secretary, Namma Teacher’s Colony Residents Welfare Association: “The BBMP workers dug a 10 feet hole into the ground, put a ring around it, placed gravel, charcoal and sand at the bottom for about 3-4 feet, and covered the well with a grill, so people don’t fall into it. Whenever it rains, all the impurities will settle down because of the sand and gravel, and the rest of the good water will recharge the groundwater levels.”

HSR cops bust prostitution racket in Sector 3 8

A prostitution racket was busted by HSR Layout cops in Sector 3. On a tip off at 5pm on October 2, the cops conducted a swift operation between 5.30pm and 6.30pm to arrest two persons under the Immoral Traffic Prevention Act, 1956.

In addition, they managed to rescue two women who were being used to run this flesh racket. Cash worth Rs 2000 and two condoms were recovered from the accused.

Under the leadership of 56-year-old HSR inspector DR Nagaraja (he’s awaiting the new inspector of HSR before joining his new posting in Bommanahalli), two persons were arrested from house number 477/A, 1st floor, 18th C Main, Sector 3.

The two accused who have been arrested are Madan, a native of Okalipuram, and Kiran, a native of Bommanahalli. The third accused person Kumar, a resident of Hebbal, is still at large.

The two women who were rescued from prostitution are now under protective custody. They are aged 24 and 33 and natives of West Bengal and Maharashtra respectively.

Rajiv who calls himself the ‘spa manager’ claims to be managing Sanjana Spa across the city, including HSR Layout. If you are looking for a physical location, there isn’t any. It’s in rooms rented out across the city. And such a location was traced by the HSR cops on October 2 whose story was mentioned in an earlier story today.

We followed up on the story and realised that this prostitution racket had truly gone high tech. There is a website that talks about the various services they offer for Rs 4000 for two hours of wholesome fun or Rs 6000 for three hours. The rates differ for other services detailed below.

While two people are arrested, one person is still at large. Curiously, their social media posts on Google+ and Twitter are still alive and well, and so is their website. They propose to offer all kinds of services imaginable with massages named lingam, sandwich, fourhands, happy ending, testicle, prostate, erotic, body to body, and full service. It goes on to define ‘full service’ as “lip kissing, tongue play, oral, smooch, Squeezing, top riding, InterC”.

We called the number given on the website, and they took a long time to pick up the phone. Finally, when the person at the other end picked up, he only said this in Kannada: “No service today”. When we asked if it’s there tomorrow, he said, “One month”. When we asked him, if it’s available anywhere else, he said, “Full close in Bangalore.”

Person shares OTP on phone and loses Rs 41884! 16

A resident of Lingarajpuram is the latest victim of cybercrime. Since these are online transactions with no geographical boundary, we are sharing this story with you as it can affect HSR residents just as much. Forewarned is forearmed.

On October 1, between 12am and 1246am, Mohammed Umar, 46 years, was called by some strangers who asked for his card number and OTP. Completely caught unawares thinking they were from the bank he had an account with, he gave away the details and ended up losing Rs 41884 from his bank overnight.

Cheats are employing various techniques to convince people to share their bank details, PIN and OTP. No matter who calls you, you are not supposed to share these details with anyone even if your card is lost or locked out. These are some of the tricks the fraudsters use to send you into a panic, so you have no time to think, and end up giving them the information they seek to wipe away your life’s savings.

Another option is to always keep less money in your savings or current account and most of your money in your FD account. This will help you to some extent. However, if the fraudsters have access to your net banking account, you can’t prevent your FD money also from being wiped out. To prevent cases, never enable netbanking on your account.

Bangalore receives 13 cybercrime cases a day!

Bangalore receives 13 cybercrime cases a day! 21
The warnings that you have got so far on the various cybercrimes in the city are not to be ignored. Bangalore city alone has received an average of 13 such cases every day this year. So far, close to 3500 complaints have been registered by the Cybercrime police station on Palace Road in central Bangalore.

Bangalore receives 13 cybercrime cases a day! 22

Most of the cases happen to be over phone and online. And much of the cases that we came across happen to be people getting cheated from advertisements placed by fraudulent people on mobile apps, websites and even 24-hour shopping channels.

Take the case of 48-year-old Mubin Masarath. On September 29, he ordered for some stuff on Shop CJ, the 24-hour home shopping channel. Around 1230pm, he receives a call asking him to deposit Rs 14,600 into a bank account specified by them over the phone. He does the same and waits for the goods to arrive.

When the products never arrive, he realised the fraud and filed a complaint with the cybercrime police station on October 2, 2018. This was the 3457th complaint received by the cybercrime police station in Bangalore this year.

Another case received just yesterday (October 3) by the cybercrime police station involved a 28-year-old resident of Sanjaynagar, Gagansri. While looking for a job online, she got an email from “werner.burghardt@t-online.de”. For various reasons, the complainant paid several installments to the bank account number specified in the email and ended up losing Rs 81950. While the reasons are not specified in the FIR, these emails usually tap into the greed of the person and promise to pay you someone’s inheritance, or a lottery if you only pay the shipping charges or interest.

When a common person is told that he will get Rs 10 lakh if he just pays 1 lakh, he ends up borrowing the money from everyone and investing all his savings into it, little realising that he is being defrauded.

The moral of the story? Nothing comes easy. If the deal is too good to be true, it usually is fraudulent. And if anybody asks you to pay the money first or asks for your debit/credit card numbers, PIN, or OTP, don’t share it with anyone; not even with the bank, shopping website, TV channel, mobile app or any other financial institution.

‘Sector 6 to Ecospace took me 2 hours’

Unlike 20 minutes earlier, it took Mrs Biju Chacko, a resident of Sector 6, almost two hours to reach Ecospace in Bellandur just now.

'Sector 6 to Ecospace took me 2 hours' 23

Google Maps is telling us that the distance of around 9 kilometres can now be reached in 44 minutes because “fastest route now due to traffic conditions, and it’s getting better”.
Having just reached the office, Mrs Chacko was asking us, “Is there a problem on Outer Ring Road? Left HSR two hours ago and just reached Ecospace. There is bumper to bumper traffic.”
To all those people who are planning to use ORR, this will serve as a forewarning, so you can either postpone your travel plans or defer them.
UPDATEAt 1210pm, Google Maps is showing a 28-minute delay from Sector 6 to Ecospace, and this traffic congestion was first reported as early as 8am. Similarly, there is a 18-minute delay if you are taking the stretch from Jakkasandra to Ecospace.

Illegal parking of trucks on 5th Main

The problem of illegally parking trucks along 5th Main in Sector 7 continues unabated despite complaints from residents for the last several months. The menace is particularly critical near 24th Cross, according to residents.

Illegal parking of trucks on 5th Main 24

“The trucks are parked near three vacant sites, adjacent to Imperial Solitaire apartments,” says resident Ratnakar B. “Huge garbage dumping is happening on the footpath in the cover of trucks at night and in the early morning.” The residents complain that pedestrians are forced to walk in the centre of the heavy traffic, fraught with danger. “Many accidents have happened in the past,” says Ratnakar. “The dumped garbage emits foul smell and is unbearable for residents. Although the BBMP contractor is clearing the garbage regularly, the stench is not coming down.”
The residents have complained to not only the BBMP, but also the traffic police and MLA Satish Reddy about this, but no concrete action has been taken so far. What is making the matters worse is that the trucks are owned by operators having offices close by.
