Over 2600 concerned citizens have petitioned online to get Christ University to act on sexual harassment allegations on campus. Within a month after the online statement, the University Grants Commission (UGC) asked the institution to file an Action Taken Report on the allegations.
Despite media reports, the university did nothing for three months. That’s when the citizens decided to alert the UGC about their online campaign against Christ University. Within a month, the governing body took action by asking the institution to come clean on the issue.
The moral policing allegations gathered momentum on social media when students shared their trauma on campus. Some said that they suffered urinary tract infections because they were locked up in auditoriums. Others said they were called by various names by the college staff that undermined their self esteem. The result, according to some students, is rampant sexism, arbitrary punishments, and inappropriate behaviour by the staff members. One person said: “You can’t be a feminist there without being in pain”. Despite letters to the Vice Chancellor and the internal complaints committee, the institution has maintained silence for years, which has irked the students even more.
The online petition’s primary goal of getting the UGC to act has been fulfilled. However, there are two more on the list:
Ensure that the identified perpetrator(s) is dismissed
Make recommendations for the long-term safety of students and oversee their implementation
Will the institution cleanse its moral policing stables or continue to remain silent remains to be seen. If you feel outraged by what is going on, you can sign the petition now by clicking here.
