A resident of Lingarajpuram is the latest victim of cybercrime. Since these are online transactions with no geographical boundary, we are sharing this story with you as it can affect HSR residents just as much. Forewarned is forearmed.

On October 1, between 12am and 1246am, Mohammed Umar, 46 years, was called by some strangers who asked for his card number and OTP. Completely caught unawares thinking they were from the bank he had an account with, he gave away the details and ended up losing Rs 41884 from his bank overnight.

Cheats are employing various techniques to convince people to share their bank details, PIN and OTP. No matter who calls you, you are not supposed to share these details with anyone even if your card is lost or locked out. These are some of the tricks the fraudsters use to send you into a panic, so you have no time to think, and end up giving them the information they seek to wipe away your life’s savings.

Another option is to always keep less money in your savings or current account and most of your money in your FD account. This will help you to some extent. However, if the fraudsters have access to your net banking account, you can’t prevent your FD money also from being wiped out. To prevent cases, never enable netbanking on your account.
