In phase two of the footpath encroachment removal drive, BBMP officials joined hands with the police and residents today to demolish many more structures that have encroached the footpaths on 24th Main, 27th Main and Iblur main Road. This was a follow-up to the phase one operations that occurred last Saturday.
Many more signages, canopies, staircases and other encroachments were brought down by cranes and demolition workers today. The pictures convey the whole story while our previous story on encroachments disseminates the concept behind it. The idea is to implement the law, based on a Karnataka High Court order, and also do their job. Keep the footpaths free for pedestrian movement and ensure citizen safety. The upshot? Whenever you see signboards or any other structural, temporary or permanent, they are largely unauthorised. A footpath is meant only for pedestrian movement, not for stalls, staircases, signages or parking. If anybody tells you otherwise, he is lying or completely ignorant of the law.
