Victims of smartphone thefts are crying hoarse, but phone recoveries in such cases are quite rare. When the cops catch inter-state thieves and recover a haul of vehicles and phones, that’s when you might get your devices back. But that’s almost like hoping against hope. One such victim is Lakshmi M of HSR Layout. Last month, her husband’s mobile was snatched from his pocket by three thieves on a bike near Cakewala on 17th Cross Road. “After snatching his phone, they immediately went to SP Road as we traced it there.”
Though Lakshmi has filed a police complaint, she hasn’t heard from the cops yet. “No use of it, we didn’t get our phone back,” she says. However, such complaints are important to understand the extent to which such thefts are occurring in the city. Besides, if your phone is insured or company-owned, a police complaint is a must to get a new one.
If you have your phone’s receipt, it will contain the IMEI number. Just provide this number to your telecom provider, and they will block your SIM card, turning your stolen phone into a paper weight. A police complaint is also important because there is the possibility that the thieves could use your SIM card for other illegal activities. If you don’t have this proof, you could be indicted for the crimes they commit. Therefore, insure your phone, particularly if it’s a costly one, and also file a police complaint to get back your money. Also, erase your phone data using ‘Find My Phone’ feature or alerting the service provider to prevent any data theft.
