When COVID-19 began, all the houses within 100 metres of the quarantined home were being disinfected. Besides, barricades were placed on both sides of the road to indicate the containment zone. However, 45 days ago, this procedure was modified. There are no more barricades. Only the house that is under home quarantine is disinfected by specially deputed people wearing Personal Protective Equipment.

How garbage is picked up from quarantined homes
  • The garbage supervisor gets a daily list of people under home quarantine.
  • Those homes are given two biobags by the waste collectors, and such garbage is collected once a week.
  • The garbage collector wears the protective gear, disinfects the biobag and loads it on to the vehicle.
  • Once the vehicle reaches the unloading spot at a secondary collection point, the compactor is also disinfected before it is picked up by a biomedical waste management agency.
No more barricades or containment zones of this nature in Bengaluru. It is home isolation now where the garbage collectors visit homes once a week to collect the biobags

Disinfecting waste in containment zones. Now this practice is confined to just the homes which are infected.
