‘Underground wells’ to recharge groundwater in parts of Sector 5 & 6

Ward 173 that includes a part of HSR Layout Sector 5 and Sector 6 residents, is off to a great start. Two percolation/recovery pits have been dug today in Teacher’s Colony that will not only prevent flooding of roads but also recharge the groundwater. By the end of the month, the entire ward will get about 68 such pits.

The recovery pits can also be called ‘underground wells’ and this work began in Ward 173 last week with Venkatapura. However, some residents objected to it fearing that their building will collapse if the pits come up close to their houses. The work was stopped but has resumed now with pits being dug in parks and stormwater drains, an idea that is inspired from resident Ashwini who has made stormwater drain wells, a successful way to recharge groundwater in Sahakar Nagar about six months ago.
The brainchild of Sudhakar Reddy, Ward 173 corporator Saraswathamma’s son, this is an idea worth emulating in Ward 174 that includes six sectors of HSR Layout.

Says Mohan Govindiah, secretary, Namma Teacher’s Colony Residents Welfare Association: “The BBMP workers dug a 10 feet hole into the ground, put a ring around it, placed gravel, charcoal and sand at the bottom for about 3-4 feet, and covered the well with a grill, so people don’t fall into it. Whenever it rains, all the impurities will settle down because of the sand and gravel, and the rest of the good water will recharge the groundwater levels.”

HSR cops bust prostitution racket in Sector 3

HSR cops bust prostitution racket in Sector 3 3

A prostitution racket was busted by HSR Layout cops in Sector 3. On a tip off at 5pm on October 2, the cops conducted a swift operation between 5.30pm and 6.30pm to arrest two persons under the Immoral Traffic Prevention Act, 1956.

In addition, they managed to rescue two women who were being used to run this flesh racket. Cash worth Rs 2000 and two condoms were recovered from the accused.

Under the leadership of 56-year-old HSR inspector DR Nagaraja (he’s awaiting the new inspector of HSR before joining his new posting in Bommanahalli), two persons were arrested from house number 477/A, 1st floor, 18th C Main, Sector 3.

The two accused who have been arrested are Madan, a native of Okalipuram, and Kiran, a native of Bommanahalli. The third accused person Kumar, a resident of Hebbal, is still at large.

The two women who were rescued from prostitution are now under protective custody. They are aged 24 and 33 and natives of West Bengal and Maharashtra respectively.

Rajiv who calls himself the ‘spa manager’ claims to be managing Sanjana Spa across the city, including HSR Layout. If you are looking for a physical location, there isn’t any. It’s in rooms rented out across the city. And such a location was traced by the HSR cops on October 2 whose story was mentioned in an earlier story today.

We followed up on the story and realised that this prostitution racket had truly gone high tech. There is a website that talks about the various services they offer for Rs 4000 for two hours of wholesome fun or Rs 6000 for three hours. The rates differ for other services detailed below.

While two people are arrested, one person is still at large. Curiously, their social media posts on Google+ and Twitter are still alive and well, and so is their website. They propose to offer all kinds of services imaginable with massages named lingam, sandwich, fourhands, happy ending, testicle, prostate, erotic, body to body, and full service. It goes on to define ‘full service’ as “lip kissing, tongue play, oral, smooch, Squeezing, top riding, InterC”.

We called the number given on the website, and they took a long time to pick up the phone. Finally, when the person at the other end picked up, he only said this in Kannada: “No service today”. When we asked if it’s there tomorrow, he said, “One month”. When we asked him, if it’s available anywhere else, he said, “Full close in Bangalore.”

A resident of Lingarajpuram is the latest victim of cybercrime. Since these are online transactions with no geographical boundary, we are sharing this story with you as it can affect HSR residents just as much. Forewarned is forearmed.

On October 1, between 12am and 1246am, Mohammed Umar, 46 years, was called by some strangers who asked for his card number and OTP. Completely caught unawares thinking they were from the bank he had an account with, he gave away the details and ended up losing Rs 41884 from his bank overnight.

Cheats are employing various techniques to convince people to share their bank details, PIN and OTP. No matter who calls you, you are not supposed to share these details with anyone even if your card is lost or locked out. These are some of the tricks the fraudsters use to send you into a panic, so you have no time to think, and end up giving them the information they seek to wipe away your life’s savings.

Another option is to always keep less money in your savings or current account and most of your money in your FD account. This will help you to some extent. However, if the fraudsters have access to your net banking account, you can’t prevent your FD money also from being wiped out. To prevent cases, never enable netbanking on your account.

Bangalore receives 13 cybercrime cases a day!

Bangalore receives 13 cybercrime cases a day! 16
The warnings that you have got so far on the various cybercrimes in the city are not to be ignored. Bangalore city alone has received an average of 13 such cases every day this year. So far, close to 3500 complaints have been registered by the Cybercrime police station on Palace Road in central Bangalore.

Bangalore receives 13 cybercrime cases a day! 17

Most of the cases happen to be over phone and online. And much of the cases that we came across happen to be people getting cheated from advertisements placed by fraudulent people on mobile apps, websites and even 24-hour shopping channels.

Take the case of 48-year-old Mubin Masarath. On September 29, he ordered for some stuff on Shop CJ, the 24-hour home shopping channel. Around 1230pm, he receives a call asking him to deposit Rs 14,600 into a bank account specified by them over the phone. He does the same and waits for the goods to arrive.

When the products never arrive, he realised the fraud and filed a complaint with the cybercrime police station on October 2, 2018. This was the 3457th complaint received by the cybercrime police station in Bangalore this year.

Another case received just yesterday (October 3) by the cybercrime police station involved a 28-year-old resident of Sanjaynagar, Gagansri. While looking for a job online, she got an email from “werner.burghardt@t-online.de”. For various reasons, the complainant paid several installments to the bank account number specified in the email and ended up losing Rs 81950. While the reasons are not specified in the FIR, these emails usually tap into the greed of the person and promise to pay you someone’s inheritance, or a lottery if you only pay the shipping charges or interest.

When a common person is told that he will get Rs 10 lakh if he just pays 1 lakh, he ends up borrowing the money from everyone and investing all his savings into it, little realising that he is being defrauded.

The moral of the story? Nothing comes easy. If the deal is too good to be true, it usually is fraudulent. And if anybody asks you to pay the money first or asks for your debit/credit card numbers, PIN, or OTP, don’t share it with anyone; not even with the bank, shopping website, TV channel, mobile app or any other financial institution.

Illegal parking of trucks on 5th Main

The problem of illegally parking trucks along 5th Main in Sector 7 continues unabated despite complaints from residents for the last several months. The menace is particularly critical near 24th Cross, according to residents.

Illegal parking of trucks on 5th Main 19

“The trucks are parked near three vacant sites, adjacent to Imperial Solitaire apartments,” says resident Ratnakar B. “Huge garbage dumping is happening on the footpath in the cover of trucks at night and in the early morning.” The residents complain that pedestrians are forced to walk in the centre of the heavy traffic, fraught with danger. “Many accidents have happened in the past,” says Ratnakar. “The dumped garbage emits foul smell and is unbearable for residents. Although the BBMP contractor is clearing the garbage regularly, the stench is not coming down.”
The residents have complained to not only the BBMP, but also the traffic police and MLA Satish Reddy about this, but no concrete action has been taken so far. What is making the matters worse is that the trucks are owned by operators having offices close by.

Residents Watch impact: BDA Complex flyover service road gets fixed overnight

hsr layout roads

Within 24 hours of writing about the sad state of the service road under the flyover that was neglected for over two years, the BBMP has fixed the road with a fresh coat of tar.

They have not just filled the pothole, but the entire portion of the problematic stretch to ensure that water does not stagnate. We thank the BBMP for keeping their word with Residents Watch and coming good on their promise.

Once the state government grants the money for the road development works for the city, we could see the entire stretch from Silk Board to Iblur being relaid. But until then, this is a good stop-gap arrangement.

Agara Lake jogging track is usable again. Cycling not allowed yet

Agara Lake jogging track is usable again. Cycling not allowed yet 21

The Agara Lake jogging track is being used by the walkers and joggers again. However, cyclists are not allowed yet. For those tuning in just now, a portion of the muddy pathway had collapsed due to a leakage in the BWSSB pipeline that runs underneath the track. This was because of the tumultuous rains a few days ago.

“The Agara Lake track is fixed and people are using it,” says Kavitha Reddy of the Agara Lake Protection & Management Society. “On the first two days, the sewage water was pumped out from the leakage, and later it was filled with mud and gravel. Due to continuous rains, this part of the track is slushy, but once it dries up, it will be evened out, and the tiles on the cycle track will be put back. Currently, the cycles are not allowed as many cyclists will cycle on the mud track and spoil it further. But in a few days, it will be restored back to normalcy!

Somasundrapalya lake work delayed by rains; should be ready by November

Somasundrapalya lake work delayed by rains; should be ready by November 25

If all goes well, the Somasundrapalya Lake near Sector 2 will be rejuvenated and open to public by November, according to BBMP sources.

The electric poles near the lake will be shifted to ensure that there are no live wires near the waterbody. There will be a 13-feet road for the residents surrounding the lake to travel through. The lake will be barricaded from this pathway to ensure that the waterbody’s jurisdiction is maintained. In addition, the temples that have come up in the lake premises will be demolished.

Speaking to Residents Watch, Jagannath Rao, the Deputy Conservator of forests, Lakes, BBMP, said: “We will mercilessly demolish all the encroachments in the lake premises just like we have done in the waterbodies of Sownkere, Deverabeesanahalli, Kempambudhi and Ambalipura earlier. We will also ensure that the people living nearby will not be inconvenienced and provide a pathway, so they can move around the waterbody without disturbing the lake visitors. We will be shifting all the utilities like electric poles that could be an obstacle in the lake area to ensure that nothing goes inside the lake.”

Regarding the 10-year-old encroachment of Ayyappaswamy temple that is right next to the major stormwater drain, the BBMP has written to the tahsildar as it’s an issue to be taken up at the level of the Deputy Commissioner. “We will definitely demolish it and ensure that the lake boundary is for the lake only. If need be, we will build a gym or a yoga platform, but definitely not allow a public workship place,” said Rao. “In Kempambudhi lake, our own BBMP staffer has encroached the lake bed area, but we will throw him out too and turn that house into a toilet and a reading room for senior citizens.”

RAINS DELAYED THE WORKS BY TWO MONTHS
The rains have delayed the works as the desilted material takes a long time to dry. “The oily content doesn’t dry quickly, and we cannot load this wet material on to the vehicles. That has been our major constraint,” said Rao. “In addition, there are many other pollutants that cannot be left in the lakebed. We have to remove them all. The leachette (from the Karnataka Compost Development Corporation) has spoiled the mud underneath. It has turned into solid blocks of red, yellow and grey. We have to keep removing this soil until we get good earth.”

According to the BBMP, the soil is being removed layer by layer and the machines are working round the clock. All the rainwater is being diverted to the Outer Ring Road stormwater drain through 24th Main. “We have made two drains; one is a box drain and another is a piped drain,” says Rao. “All the sewage and excess water is going to Agara Lake side of the drain. By November, we will rejuvenate and fill the lake with rainwater and open it for the public.”

Resident launches door delivery of plastic and chemical-free groceries in HSR

Vandana Pandey, a new resident of HSR Layout, quit her cushy job as a software engineer a year ago, went on a cycling trip across Rajasthan and Gujarat for several months, and moved in to HSR Layout to start an online grocery store with a difference. Her ‘Suunya’ outlet delivers groceries which are plastic and chemical-free.

Born in a farming family where she lived a zero-waste lifestyle in her small village in UP, she finally found a job that stays connected with nature. Soon, she plans to set up a warehouse where customers can visit and fill up their cloth bags and steel containers with nature-friendly goods.

You can place your order through Whatsapp and your paper and plastic-free goods will be delivered to your doorstep. “It’s a self-funded initiative on a small scale, started inside one room in my friend’s house,” she says. “Our focus is not so much on recycling but using resources wisely, because recycled products will eventually lead to a landfill,” says Vandana.

In the first phase, she is providing non-perishable food Items, and will soon venture into home and personal care, fresh fruits, and vegetables, with perishable items to be the last on her list.

Vandana is working with small and medium scale farmers of Karnataka who practice natural farming and don’t add synthetic chemicals, pesticides or fertilisers. “I believe food miles is part of sustainable living, and I want to promote local produce as much possible,” she says.

Why not call it an organic store? “When our air and soil is not organic and polluted, how can the produce be organic? There will be traces of chemicals,” she says. “All we can ensure is there are no external chemicals and pesticides.”

If you are not sure of any so-called food is organic, Vandana has a simple tip. “Your body is smarter than your smartphone. Just connect with it, and it will tell you without any reports and certifications.”

Vandana wants each resident to ‘rethink, refill, reconnect’, and would like Suunya to aid the conversation on the waste we are creating. “Let us all together change the shopping environment and make conscious consumption, the new normal,” she signs off.
