The Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) of the state government has raided the BBMP office in Bommanahalli on Begur Road. The raids are going on as we write this. The Joint Commissioner of Bommanahalli and other senior officials of Bommanahalli are being questioned in a closed door meeting, according to our sources. HSR Layout comes under Bommanahalli office’s jurisdiction.
The raid has unearthed over Rs 900 crore worth scam related to fake bills, and the provident fund and medical benefits of pourakarmikas (sweepers). We have heard of rampant corruption in the Bommanahalli office relating to granting of trade licence, khatas, and even birth and death certificates. We are not sure if these discrepancies will also be unearthed during this raid, but the residents are happy that such a raid will instill fear among the BBMP contractors and officials who are the beneficiaries of this largescale corruption in the civic corridors.
Says Sector 1 resident and civic activist Kavitha Reddy who was present during her personal visit this afternoon: “It is shameless that the PF and ESI of pourakarmikas are fudged and fake bills are being produced. It is downright disgusting… ad-hoc garbage contractors, roll-call, fake bills… and relatives of elected representatives are contractors and Suchi Mithras… not a single contract in Bommanahalli is as per the tender rules.”
The Anti-Corruption Bureau is a specialized agency whose job is to collect information on corruption, investigate complaints of bribery and corruption, and even prosecute officials if found guilty. The Bureau handles all cases registered under the provisions of Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.
