On December 21, 2019, at around 7.30pm, Koramangala inspector SD Shashidhar received a tip off that two people were illegally selling parakeets to people near Ambedkar park in Koramangala 8th Block. He was told that these birds were illegally caught in the forests and being sold in the city.
After ascertaining the facts, the inspector immediately sent his police constables to have the two people apprehended for allegedly violating several rules under Sections 9, 39, 40, 44, 48A, 50, 51, and 55 of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972 that prohibits hunting, killing, owning and selling wild animals. The multiple offences carry a penalty ranging from Rs 10,000 to Rs 25,000, and a jail term of three to seven years. The two accused have also been charged under Indian Penal Code 379 for theft.
